We generally recommend docile and hardy species like the Chilean Rose Hair (Grammostola rosea) or the Curly Hair(Tliltocatl albopilosus). These species are known for being slow-moving, tolerant of small temperature fluctuations, and easy to feed, making them excellent first pets.
Your setup depends on the species. Terrestrial (ground-dwelling) species require floor space and deep substrate for burrowing, while arboreal (tree-dwelling) species need height and plenty of anchor points (cork bark, branches) for climbing and webbing. Always ensure the enclosure has excellent ventilation and a secure, lockable lid.
For most juvenile and adult tarantulas, feeding once every 7 to 14 days is sufficient. Spiderlings should be fed 2-3 times per week. The general rule is to feed one appropriately sized prey item (like crickets or roaches) until the spider's abdomen is plump but not overly distended. If the spider refuses food, it may be preparing to molt (shed its skin).
Lifespans vary drastically by species and gender. Female tarantulas are incredibly long-lived, with some common species like the Acanthoscurria geniculata (Brazilian Giant White Knee) often reaching 15 to 25 years. Males, however, typically mature much faster and have shorter lifespans, usually living only 3 to 7 years.
All tarantulas possess venom, but for the vast majority of species kept as pets, a bite is medically comparable to a bee sting (pain, localized swelling, cramping). A bite is extremely rare unless the spider is severely provoked or squeezed. Additionally, many species have urticating hairs (tiny irritating hairs) that they kick off as a primary defense. We advise against handling any tarantula.
Do not disturb it! If a spider is lying on its back, it is likely in the process of molting (shedding its exoskeleton). This is a very stressful and delicate time. If you interfere, you could fatally injure it. The process can take anywhere from a few hours to a day. The spider will be vulnerable and should not be fed for about a week after a successful molt.
